Northern Kentucky University Science Center
In the summer of 2000, I was asked by Michael Jacobs of Omni Architects and Mary Paula Schuh of Campus Planning to create images for fourteen interior glass panels for the new science center. After an initial presentation to the science faculty on my past work, I met with small groups of scientists as well as individual faculty members to gain an awareness of issues and images within their particular fields. I was given access to their laboratories and books, and we had many stimulating and inspiring conversations. I then created imagery using ink on paper, computer manipulated charcoal drawings, and photographs of hand carved porcelain bones and seeds. These images became very large (up to 10' high) black and white transparencies sandwiched between two pieces of glass and then mounted in the walls of four rooms. Some of the images such as "Hidden Dimensions" and " Ice, Water, Vapor" refer to specific disciplines (physics and chemistry, etc.). Other images are meant to be inclusive, such as "Earth" and "Space" which show a columnar sample of the universe, starting at the center of the earth, traveling through physical forces, geology, microorganisms and plant life, then into the human body and outward through the atmosphere and into the cosmos.
